Parents and Guardians:

Welcome to a new and exciting school year! As your child's 7th and 8th grade teachers, we would like to provide you with a brief overview of our individual classroom procedures and policies, as well as our academic and behavioral expectations for this year. If you have any further questions, please contact us during our planning time from 8:50-9:35 daily.

Shonda Bowling - MATH ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it )

Students will keep a composition book with all notes and important information. Students may also want to keep a folder for graded work and accelerated math. All graded work will be returned to the student. Class work/homework will be given daily. I will require students to show their work on ALL math problems. I will not assign an excessive amount of problems, and students are encouraged to work on these assignments at school while I am available to help. Grades will be taken from classwork, homework, quizzes/tests, and Accelerated Math. Students will be required to pass three math objectives per week in Accelerated Math. Students will work on these during enrichment and as homework. If students get behind, they will be required to work on AM during study hall until they are caught up.

Janet Lloyd - ENGLISH/WRITING ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it )

Writing is one of the most important skills your child will ever use.  During my class, students will have the opportunity to express themselves through fun and creative writing, but they will also be taught how to plan and write an essay and how to respond to informational text and research based writing.  Grades will be taken from daily work, homework, quizzes / tests, and major writing projects, such as research papers. One major project will be required each 9 weeks.  This project will be greatly weighted, and your child cannot pass the nine weeks without participating.

Laura Lloyd – LITERATURE ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it )

Literature class is a wonderful opportunity for your child to strengthen his or her reading skills and hopefully develop a greater love for reading. Countless statistics show that students who simply read at home for enjoyment are constantly exposed to new words and facts. As a result, they tend to achieve greater success in school and later in life. Therefore, students will be required to meet individualized and easily attainable reading goals in Accelerated Reading. Homework is rarely assigned in my class; however, students need to read chapter books for a few minutes each night to help them achieve their AR monthly point goals. Students may also use Enrichment time to read at school as well. Students who do not meet their point goals will read in study hall until their monthly goal has been met. To keep up with everything we are learning in class, your child is responsible for a wireless composition book that will be randomly checked. Students will receive grades for daily work, quizzes/tests, and projects. Some of these projects, such as research papers, will be a major part of your child's grade.

Jared Sexton – SCIENCE ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Hello, my name is Jared Sexton and I will be teaching 7th and 8th grade science.  Notes will be kept in a composition or spiral notebook.  An additional folder will be used to store all graded work.  Daily work, labs, quizzes, and tests will be carried out throughout the year to determine the student’s grade.

Marsha Sharp - AMERICAN HISTORY/WORLD HISTORY ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it )

Your child will receive a history book to use for this year. Your child will have assignments throughout the year that he or she will be graded on. These assignments include, but are not limited to, questions at the end of each chapter, tests, essays, quizzes, projects, and various map skills throughout the year.

___________________________________________________________________________________

We will be covering new skills daily in each class so please be sure your child is at school every day and ready for class on time. Class begins promptly at 7:50. Students will be responsible for getting any work they have missed when they return to school. Please review the attendance policies in the handbook. Together we can make this a great year! After you have reviewed this letter and the discipline policy located on the back, please sign it and provide a telephone number where you may be reached during the day, should we ever need to contact you. Once again, welcome back and thanks for your help!

Discipline Plan

Classroom Rules

  1. Follow all classroom procedures.
  2. Respect others and their personal belongings.
  3. Be on time for class with all materials needed for class.
  4. Follow directions the first time they are given
  5. Be quiet in the hallways.

Consequences If You Choose to Break a Rule

First Time:                         First Bubble-Warning

Second Time:                    Second Bubble – Detention Hall

Third Time:                        Third Bubble - Detention Hall and phone call home

Fourth Time:                    Fourth Bubble- Detention Hall, call home, In-School Suspension

* Three days of detention in one week will result in a referral for In-School Suspension & a phone call home.*

Severe Disruption:            Student Sent Immediately to the Office.

If students receive a bubble from #27-33, the school wide procedures will be followed.  A phone call home will inform you of the infraction and disciplinary action.

Recess is a privilege that student earn by having no bubbles and by completing all work. If study hall is needed, students will remain in the classroom and work on ANY missing assignments or make-up work.

Students will not be held to the above consequences for using the bathroom during class, unless they abuse this privilege. This bubble serves as a record for all teachers to track excessive bathroom trips, other than scheduled breaks.

Rewards

Praise                                                   Extra Recess

Positive Notes                                     Whole-Class Free Time

Positive Phone Calls Home                 No Homework Night

Game Day                                           Incentive trips

*All class trips are contingent upon good behavior and obtaining Accelerated Reading/Math goals. Therefore, students must have less than 25 bubbles during a nine week period, have no In-School or Out-of-School Suspensions, and meet all AR & AM goals to be eligible to participate in a class trip. *
